B I O G R A P H Y .................................................................................................... Born in Dallas, Texas, Janie moved to Michigan in 1985. Over the past 20 years, Janie has lived in Illinois, Michigan, and Texas. She currently lives in Dallas. ![]() Janie writes and illustrates picture books for young children. She uses various materials and techniques to create lovable characters and memorable children’s art. Janie draws and paints both digitally and traditionally--usually combining both methods. She loves to travel, read, draw, paint, write, and cook meals for friends and family. Janie graduated with a BFA in graphic design and a minor in literature from the University of North Texas in 1983. Over the years she developed her painting and illustration skills by attending classes at local universities, including two children’s book illustration classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Since 1987 she has owned and operated a corporate graphic design studio where she designs books and brochures, and creates logos and corporate identities. In 1997, she began doing more illustration--both for conceptual markets and especially for the children’s market. She uses her extensive graphic design skills when composing and preparing her art. .................................................................................................... |

Did she say DUMMIED? What the heck does that mean? A dummy is a rough form of what the finished book will look like. It’s also called a mock-up. An artist pastes type in position and draws rough sketches of the pictures to show the editor at the publishing house what she is thinking--instead of just submitting the story in text or word form. Dummies can be very rough or very “finished” and take anywhere from days to months to complete. ....................................................................................................
