Pre-K through 1st grade: Janie reads two of her books as the page images are digitally projected onto your projection screen. She explains a little about how she illustrates (traditionally and digitally, with an art tabletwhich she uses in the presentation). And she guides rhyming and rhythm activities using one of her books as a reference. Then Janie and the students create a character together as she draws their suggestions (5-6 children are called upon to participate). The students enjoy participating and are engaged; they watch intently as Janie creates their character on-screen.
2nd through 5th grades: Janie reads one or two of her books as the page images are digitally projected onto your projection screen. She explains how she illustrates (traditionally and digitally, with an art tabletwhich she uses in the presentation). She guides various age-appropriate story-related activities (ie, character development, story arc) using her books as a reference. Depending on the time frame and grade level, Janie may describe more about the book-making process. Then she and the students create a character together as she draws their suggestions (5-6 children are called upon to participate). The students enjoy participating and are engaged; they watch intently as Janie creates their character on-screen. (This age group usually has more questions about Janie and her work, so a little more time is allotted for questions.)
6th grade through high school/college art groups: Janie is available to present and discuss her methods of creating stories and/or book art. Using both traditional and digital media, she has been illustrating for over 10 years and enjoys sharing that experience with older students. Janie uses a variety of digital programs to create, manipulate and/or finish her illustrations, including Corel Painter, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator.
